  • Use of Todorov's narrative theory to build the tension: leaves us in a cliffhanger: we aren't exposed to: conventional horror genre films.

  • Equilibrium settled: non diegetic incidental peaceful and cheerful lyrical music : length of takes are longer and positions the audience in a false sense of security: equilibrium and there's no tension or disruption: familiar atmosphere and fluid image of this equilibrium.

High key lighting and instrumental, lyrical music

  • Diegetic sound of the nursery toys and the rising rush of shots and short lengths of take: enhance the rising tension

  • Small pauses to show the credits, giving insights or intertextuality by making recognition of other mainstream famous films such as Saw and Paranormal activity and creating that director power recognition. Fandom and brand identity and loyalty of those films is encouraged or dragged to this film.

  • Disruption or disequilibrium as shots start to be closer to the mothers face and the use of CU and ECU is used more.

  • The  incidental music becomes quicker, so do the shots which are conventional of the genre as it makes the trailer more dramatic, thus making the audience want to watch the film. When the music reaches its climax the title appears on screen at the very end conventional of the majority of the genre’s to create that rising tension till the end and hook the audience and make them remember the film’s title when positioned at the end. The lack of consistency in the title and the changing letter creates also that sense of disequilibrium connoting incompleteness, symbolising the unresolved disruption, leaving the audience in a cliffhanger.

  • The use of icons and all the conventions of horror including camera, editing, mise en scene and representation. The use of low key lighting, house setting, chased female character… All these match the stereotypical and common conventions of the horror genre.

  • Sense of equilibrium established up until the silence and the sense of false equilibrium established and the climax and tension rising in the very unexpected noise.

  • Disequilibrium and  rising tension: short length of take shots: enhance the sense of rush and blackouts constantly after shots enhance it further. The use of flashbacks enhances that enigma code which is resolved but creates that sense of unresolved disruption as there’s a present barrier/villain from the past.

  • Interruption of the narrative by the credit like features using frases which anchor the image or shot coming next. Eg: when the it has existed for centuries and old images

  • The music and non diegetic rising tension incidental sound matches the length of take an space of shits which is very effective

  • Female character chased and killed being the victim is common on the horror
genre and stereotypical.

  • Scream or a specific scare sound at the end before the film title fades on into the screen and contrasts the rush of the shots.
