Brief skyfall mise-en-scene analysis

Meaning is created through mise en scene and specific elements to enhance a tense, eerie and dangerous mood for the audience. The use of very low key lighting, desaturated colours in the walls and everything creates a cold atmosphere by the use of cold colours such as brown, grey and black, enhancing this bunker setting. The use of suits and black but formal costume connotes seriousness and creates tension, linking with the cold colour palette, enhancing disequilibrium. The use of run down and brick settings creates this very old enhancement and lack of resources and links with the metallic chairs and seats which transmit a sense of disruption to the audience. The use of props such as glass, buttons and sliding doors connote imprisonment, portraying the seriousness of the disequilibrium part that we are positioned in. (middle of the film approximately). Black color costume aso connotes elegance, power and formality, linking and enhancing the status the two characters have. The pillars could also symbolise justice and stability, connoting tension, and enhancing this prison like setting and the disruptive character we are exposed to inside. Prison like pale yellow costume connoting uncleanness  and cheapness symbolising a lack of stability. The antagonist and the heads crew costume juxtaposed each other symbolising the difference in status and connoting bad conditions for the antagonist. Transparent cube-like setting for the antagonist connoting the villain-like character( propp's theory) which is kept away from us as the audience when positioned over the shoulder of the head, connoting danger and evilness. Few makeup and extreme eye bags for the antagonist symbolising a lack of sleep and emphasizing an evil like image. The use of long shots portraying and letting the audience experience the whole setting, and the large corridors enhance the lack of life and connoting emptiness, creating a tense mood for the audience positioned as one more prisoner maybe. It leaves us (as the audience) to position ourselves as one more of the head crew with the over the shoulder shots or as a prisoner  by the longshots where we can barely see the head crew and only the vague setting as if approaching the cell. Low angle shots of the antagonist inside the trasarent cube to connote power , positioning the audience below him and symbolise the growing disruption as he starts to shout at the head, enhancing this sense of growing anger, transmitting a sense of tension for the audience. Red matte lipstick make up for the female head connoting danger and strength, and the matte connoting coldness and seriousness symbolising her head rol. The use of iconography such as guns symbolise cross genre of crime and action, along with drama. The advance of technology in modern days is displayed here, setting the correct time era of the film. to end with, pointing out a specific use of representation, M  is the Head of the Secret Intelligence Service and she is a dominant female character and therefore gender representation is exhibited here, showing that the woman has the authority and the dominance over Daniel Craig, exerting the stereotypical view of women in a false way and subverting the dominant ideology of hero's being played by male characters and men having better and more important roles in movies. We see how stereotypes are subverted and there is a positive image of women and the fact they can also have high class jobs without sticking to gender roles.
